This programme examines factors shaping the likely nature of armed conflict in both the near future and further out, with a view to assessing their likely implications for both armed forces and policymakers.

The Future Conflict Programme examines the implications for future conflict of ongoing geopolitical, technological and military trends. Particular areas of focus include the demand for ever more integrated forces that are able to act quickly; the implications of the UK’s persistent engagement strategy for force design and readiness; the impact of disruptive technologies, including space, C4ISR, AI/autonomy and quantum science on military procurement and force modernisation; and the likely impact of the war in Ukraine on the requirements for NATO air and missile defence and on the perceived need for a return to divisional/corps-scale warfighting.
